On the head of a pin

Junior Agent Sera Fortwright of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, formerly of GCPD, formerly formerly of Scotland Yard. Her world was shattered when her brother was brutally murdered, along with his wife and their two children. When she managed to clear out the organisation that hired the hit, her talents were noticed and she was picked up by S.H.I.E.L.D.

Wow… It certainly sounds a bit odd, that’s for certain. Err, I was with Scotland Yard, in London. Thought I’d try out America for a change.

I think I worked with someone from Scotland Yard before… Oh no wait! That was someone from Her Majesty’s Secret Service, never mind.

Really… now that’s very impressive. What sort of agency is OWACA anyway?

It’s gonna be a long day.

That was most definitely not something Sera expected to hear. A few years of working homicide and she’d stopped thinking about the victims to focus entirely on vengeance toward their killers. Nice sharp tug back to reality, that was. Sera stood, offering a hand to help George up as the ME arrived for the corpse. “That’s… A really good idea, actually. Did you know her?”

George blinked. Fuck, she hadn’t quite thought of that. “Uhhhh…….” She shifted again, “Yeah, we…. met once….. in a coffee shop. We sort of bumped into each other… and we really hit it off. She was a… nice person, and she didn’t deserve this.” she crossed her arms, once again looking down on the girl’s body, “She had her whole life ahead of her…”

"Yeah… Hey, um, before I forget, lemme give you… Oh, god damn it." She stuffed her hands into her pockets, rifling around a moment before retrieving a slightly-crumpled business card. "Here. If you remember anything else, you can give me a call. Or, you know, if you want to get coffee or something." One thing was pretty painfully obvious. Sera was out of her element in anything that didn’t involve her work. "Look, the point is… You’re our only witness. I understand that you’re late for work, and as it is, we’ve got a bit more to do with the body before I can even begin to think about taking your statement. So if you’d prefer to go ahead in to work, I’d be more than willing to alert your employer to the unique circumstances surrounding your tardiness."

Well, the first I’ve met in person, yes. Dealt with bureaucratic nonsense before, but… You’re right, actually. About both. I’m not terribly familiar with all the American agency acronyms. I’m only a recent addition to Gotham myself.

Ahh… OWACA actually stands for Organization Without A Cool Acronym. It’s a fairly odd place to work. Where did you work before Gotham?

Wow… It certainly sounds a bit odd, that’s for certain. Err, I was with Scotland Yard, in London. Thought I’d try out America for a change.

“Sorry ‘bout that,” she muttered, then quickly chattered into her phone. “Are you alright? I mean, you did just potentially witness a murder. If that’s not cause to be a little freaked out, I don’t know what is. Ambulance is on its way for the body, they can bring you a shock blanket.” As she spoke, Sera patted down the corpse for ID.

she sighed again, “No, it’s fine. I mean in my line of work I’ve seen quite a few murders, and a few suicides.” She stood up brushing herself off. “I don’t need a shock blanket, just, make sure her body gets treated properly, and that her parents know she loves them or something like that.” She blinked remembering the girls final wish. “I bet she would’ve liked some flowers sent to her boyfriend too.”

To be honest, George was lucky that it was Sera, who rarely actually drew her gun. She hurried to the body and sighed, reaching down to feel for a pulse, obviously finding none. “Apologies. Can never be completely certain. I don’t suppose you saw the individual responsible for this? You’re going to need to deliver a statement, and— Hang on, George?” Sera snapped her holster shut, crouching next to the younger woman. “It’s Sera, we met once before.”

George glanced at the woman, then nodded remembering her. “Right, I forgot you mentioned you were a detective.” She shifted, “I saw the guy run off, didn’t quite catch what he looked like.” She crumbled the post-it note in her hand shoving it in her pocket. “He had on sorta baggy clothes.” She sniffed, “I’m sooo gonna be late.” she sighed, trying to remember anything else.

"Sorry ‘bout that," she muttered, then quickly chattered into her phone. "Are you alright? I mean, you did just potentially witness a murder. If that’s not cause to be a little freaked out, I don’t know what is. Ambulance is on its way for the body, they can bring you a shock blanket." As she spoke, Sera patted down the corpse for ID.

That obvious, hm? Yes, I’m rather new. Thought I’d come join the proverbial battle for Gotham.

Why?

Uh… To be honest? I might have been fine with an easy life in London, but… A little over a year ago, I got a call about a quadruple murder. And the address was my brother’s house. He and his wife… were brutally stabbed to death. Their kids each had a bullet to the skull. Mob hit. His wife’s father didn’t pay back his loans quick enough, and my family suffered for it. So… Never again. That a sufficient answer?

I’m Detective Fortwright. S’a pleasure, Doctor. Err, Doctor who, if you don’t mind me asking?

Just the Doctor.

Detective, like with a big fancy office?

Alright then. Ahh, no. More like Detective, with a big fancy desk in the middle of a crowded precinct. And you, Doctor, I suppose that refers to a medical degree?
